History at Your Fingertips – The Heydrich Terror
Did you know that Hotel Antonie is situated right next to the place where Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš attacked Reinhard Heydrich on 27 May 1942 at 10:30am, as his car rounded in a curve in Prague-Libeň? Gabčík tried to shoot Heydrich, but his Sten gun jammed. Kubiš threw a grenade that hit the right rear side of Heydrich’s vehicle. However, Heydrich didn’t die on the spot. He got treated at the nearby Na Bulovce Hospital by Czech and later German doctors. A whole floor of the hospital was closed down because of him. On 4 June the same year, Heydrich died from blood poisoning. This event is commemorated by a monument that you can see from our hotel.
